Contemporary Neuro Developmental Treatment

Participation is the ultimate goal

This approach can be used in the pool, at home, or on the soccer field.

Contemporary Neuro Developmental Treatment:

The NDTA updated its definition of NDT/ Bobath therapy to the following:

"NDT is a holistic and interdisciplinary clinical practise model informed by current and evolving research that emphasises individualised therapeutic handling based on movement analysis for habilitation and rehabilitation of individuals with neurological pathophysiology.

Using the International Classification of Function (ICF) model, the therapist applies a  problem- solving approach to assess activity and participation to identify and prioritise relevant integrities and impairments as a basis for the establishment of achievable outcomes with clients and caregivers.

An in- depth understanding of typical and atypical development, and expertise in analysis of postural control, movement, activity, and participation throughout the lifespan, form the basis for examination, evaluation, and intervention.

Therapeutic handling, used during evaluation and intervention, consists of a dynamic reciprocal interaction between the client and therapist for activation of optimal sensorimotor processing, task performance, and skill acquisition for achievement of participation in meaningful activities."

We focus on helping your child participate in their day to day functional activities:

moving around, getting dressed, sitting steady at their school desk, playing at lunchtime,

joining in sport and going  along for family walks and bike rides.

Participation is key:

Our approach is based on the World Health Organisation's International Classification of Function for Children and Youth (ICF-CY).

We've written up and example here, where a child's participation goal was to play in a Saturday soccer team with his peers.

We support your child's whole development

by coordinating with your therapy and education team

to promote communication, social, play, fine motor, problem solving and self care skills in our sessions

The approach:

The clinical reasoning approach includes identifying:

  • a participation goal

  • a functional goal

  • the contributions of all of the systems:

    • neuromuscular and musculoskeletal (using principles of NDT/ Bobath)

    • sensorimotor (using principles of Sensory Integration)

    • perceptual and motor planning (using principles of Motor Learning)

  • the environmental context

  • then developing an intervention plan:

    • preparation

    • simulation of the functional task

    • practise

    • carryover activities that can be embedded into home or school to help your child achieve their goals and participate
