Preparing for the NDIS

Many of you will be familiar with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

In their words, the NDIS "will support a better life for hundreds of thousands of Australians with a significant and permanent disability and their families and carers. The NDIS will mean peace of mind for every Australian, for anyone who has, or might acquire, a disability"

They are helpful to see people and families who are a part of the launch sites, talk about their experiences with the NDIS.

This webinar from 29th April focussed on "tips for families and carers". You can hear "NDIS staff, participants, providers and innovators talk about their experiences and tips to help people prepare for the NDIS".

This webinar from 5th June 2014 was titled "Preparing for the NDIS". The following people formed a panel who shared their experiences and responded to quesitons from the online audience. The panel included:

  • Lynne Foreman lives in the Barwon Trial Site in Geelong and was amongst the first people to enter the Scheme

  • Leah Scott also lives in the Barwon Trial site and joined the Scheme in 2013

  • Christine Scott, Leah’s mother and carer, from the Barwon Trial site

  • Samantha Boots, who has a young son with disability, and lives in South Australia

  • Katrina Rose, is among the first young people from Tasmania to join the Scheme,

The questions and responses are transcribed here.

The detail about how the NDIS will work continues to evolve. Melbourne is scheduled to move to the NDIS in 2016.

Any new funding model has its positives and its challenges, and we will do our best to help families in that transition.
